Dean N. Muthler, Sr., 90, of Lock Haven passed away Sunday, January 22, 2023.

Born May 31, 1932 in Beech Creek Twp., he was a son of the late George A. and Ettie (Orner) Muthler.

Dean was married May 5, 1955 to his first wife the former Lucy Cunningham who died in April 13, 1976. On February 10, 1978 he married the former Dorothy L. Heltman. They celebrated 44 years of marriage.

He was a member of the Laurel Run United Methodist Church and attended United Lutheran Church, Lock Haven. He was a member of the American Legion, Lock Haven.

He bought the Goodman farm in Swissdale in March of 1956 and moved in May 11, 1956. He began farming with one heifer and one hog. He started raising pigs off of three sows and began butchering them out in 3 years. In 1962 he began selling milk with two cows at the Mill Hall plant (Sheffield).

He had his own threshing machine and an 8 foot McCormick binder and threshed for 4 years custom bindering, custom plowing, baling and went on to combining. At one time he farmed 4 farms Kalmback, Shoemaker, Nelson and Laubscher and also his own farm.

Dean went on to raising beef cattle, because they quit hauling milk and would not buy bulk because of being off road.

He was drafted in the Army on January 21, 1952 where he served 16 months in Korea. Dean was discharged Nov., 5, 1954.

Dean went to work for Piper Aircraft Corp. on January 13, 1955 working in sheet metal filtering and then worked with small parts in the machine shop. He was an expert machinist.

Surviving are his loving wife, one son Neil E. Muthler, Williamsport a daughter Alma M. (Elwood, Jr.) Duck of Lock Haven and a step-son David T. (Nancy) Heltman of Zephyrhills, FL and a step-daughter Karen L. (Michael) Ricker of Lock Haven. Seven grandchildren Hope Ann, Mark, Bethany, Matthew, Sherry, Esther, Rebecca and two great grandchildren, Cassidy and Zayne.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Ernest Muthler in 1992, Dean N. Muthler, Jr. in 2019, grandson Seth D. Muthler, brother Glenn Muthler, step-mother Sallie Gardner and 3 step-sisters, Olive, Mary and Lillian.

The Funeral service will be held at Noon on Friday, January 27, 2023 at the Helt Funeral Chapel, 232 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall with Pastor Paula Smith and the Rev. Karl Runser officiating.

Friends and relatives will be received from 10:00 a.m. – Noon at the funeral chapel.

Burial will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park, Lock Haven with military honors.

Memorial Contributions can be made to Laurel Run United Methodist Church or United Lutheran Church.
